Melasma, commonly known as the “mask of pregnancy,” is a skin discoloration found on the cheeks, around the eyes and sometimes on the forehead or above the lip. While it is a condition common in pregnant women and women who take oral contraceptives, 10% of cases are men.

Melasma is believed to be caused by hormonal changes which may make the skin more likely to develop dark patches of pigment when exposed to sunlight.
